Just attacked someone with 31 mortars but nothing else, after the first round there was nothing left of his navy

I've quit using mortars in this new version. The super slow travel makes them very difficult even for local defense. I'm not saying they are rubbish, but I find I am more effective with a navy based around cats and cheaper ships, mainly.
